ELGIN, Texas – Two teenagers are dead and three were injured as a result of a rollover crash that took place on early Saturday morning near Elgin.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers, the crash happened on U.S. 290, just after midnight. The accident spot is located about a mile east of Elgin.

The victims were identified as 17-year-old Ashley Farrell and 16-year-old William Garret Sumner. Farrell was driving a truck which traveled off the road, rotated 180 degrees and rolled down an embankment. She died at the accident spot.

A total of four teens were injured in the crash, including Sumner who was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge. However, Sumner later died in the hospital.

A statement was released by Elgin ISD which said, “The Wildcat community is devastated by the loss of Ashley and Garrett. We have already arranged to have additional counselor support at elgin high school come Monday. We have also opened our campus this evening for students, staff, parents, and community to gather together to mourn and cope with the loss of our wildcat family members.”

The cause of the collision is being investigated.
