HOUSTON – A traffic accident that took place early Saturday morning on the North Freeway left a 19-year-old woman dead and six others injured.

According to police reports, the incident took place around 1:30 a.m. on I-45 north at Memory Lane. The crash was caused by a man who was driving an SUV on the highway’s feeder.

For reasons unknown, the driver left the feeder, traveled across the grass and entered the main lanes of the highway. While doing all this, his SUV crashed into the side of a Toyota Rav4 which was traveling northbound on the highway. As a result of the impact, both vehicles spun out of control. They both came to a stop against a retainer wall on the feeder.

According to police reports, there were seven women in the Toyota. All women were in their late teens and early 20s. One of the passengers, identified as 19-year-old, died at the scene. The remaining six women were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital as well and was reported to be in stable condition. He was found to be intoxicated and is expected to be charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault.

As a result of the accident, the highway was shut down for hours.
